Slacker now on the Blackberry Storm
This sharp and intuitive interface brings all of Slacker features from the web right to the palm of your hand with full touchscreen capabilities and a new performance enhancing caching system to reduce power consumption by up to 5 times that of streaming playback.
This leaves me asking myself one question… why would Slacker waste their time with all of these fancy newfangled portable applications? I mean, they can’t be that important for business… right? If they were, surely Sirius XM would have created their own by now.

Slackers only weapon is portables – they have no OEM deals for their service. They will be a flop or be taken over by SiriusXM within 1 -2 years.

One thing that is sure as Sh=t, everyone loves to listen to something, right? We have been listening to radio in our autos since the turn of time. Is that going away? No, of course not. So, music, talk, comedy, this and that is here and getting stronger. The nice thing about SAT is the fact it is not sensored. It is free speech at its best, opinionated, crude, fresh stuff.
OK, for this ever so simple reason, SXM has a big advantage over everyone else, even Apple. They have sats in the sky that have potential on top of potential. Think ahead 5 years or so from now, and think about the possibilities……
SXM is worth a heck of alot even with the pennies that it owes. I am very surprised that someone like Apple, Goggle, Microsoft, etc has not just swept in and taken SXM over, period. Are they just stupid?
Due to the sarcastic nature of your tone I assume you’re saying that siriusxm should have an application that does streaming which I’ve read elsewhere is quickly in the works (but I’ve heard it’s a pay version). The problem with siriusxm’s approach is slacker and pandora have both provided free streaming applications that do essentially the same thing. Not only are Pandora and Slacker free but they’re also outlets for the disgruntled people from siriusxm’s november slice and dice of the channel line up. I’ve tried to cancel sirius multiple times after they axed my favorite channel BOOMBOX, but multiple times they’ve given me free months. I hope they decide to bring it back. I’d like to continue to pay for the service but this one channel I listened to for over three years is about the only reason I listened and it was completely axed with no notice, nothing….Pandora and Slacker offer a *FREE* alternative (yes some ads but not nearly as bad a regular radio) experience that can be very personalized and entertaining. Although the experience isn’t near what BOOMBOX was (liquid todd did a great job) I’m very tempted to cancel siriusxm all together and subscribe to slackers service (skip unlimited songs) 49/yr versus 12.95×12.
Recently I purchased an iPhone and since I’m in the big city i’m able to listen to slacker while I drive…over EDGE/3g connectivity with little to no interruption for FREE. This is HUGE…this technology to some extent can make satellite useless…
I’m amazing now there are applications for the iPhone like clear channels ‘i heart radio’ which allow you to stream radio stations in other geographic locations which allows me to listen to a live feed of a radio talk show that I like rather than listen to my local radio stations delayed version (plays the broadcast but it’s two hours delayed, so it’s not a live broadcast).
More and more media companies are finding out that the ‘take our programming or go home’ doesn’t work. I’m excited about the future as it contains more things than top 40 especially in markets that need it (like mine which is dallas fort worth).
What’s up w price and vpolume today!!!
Echo Star is buying SIRI’s Debt. Look out as this will either force the company into bankruptcy (which I doubt)or it will become a behemoth by streaming TV into every car in America.
Although I’ve never been particularly good at predicting the future, I am looking forward to the day these internet streaming companies start spewing ads or forcing subscription based models. You can’t give stuff away forever. I believe SiriusXM will get a flood of new subscriptions because of their strongest assests, content and being commerical free.
Just a matter of time….
Both Pandora and Slacker (as well as many other sites) offer commercial free service already (for about 1/3 the price of siriusxm one year subscription). About the only unique content that siriusxm have now is their talk personalities but my comments were more about music alternatives to siriusxm. I think siriusxm really destroyed some important relationships with their customers back and november and I question who is piloting this ship? I dont think success will be easy in their future if they dont figure out what they want to be.
I hear you Mike, but as I understand it these streaming sites are like the social networks. No one really knows the ultimate business model/revenue stream quite yet. I’m betting you’ll not only get more commercials with the streamers but also higher prices. And when the USirius iphone app finally wakes up management they need to lower the startup costs/complexity to SatRad and expand out of cars, that’s when content variety and no ads will really pay off. Just my 2 cents…
Not to mention, uSirius StarPlayr will be sold World Wide. Opening up Sirius XM market from a small N.A. window to a much wider broader audience in other countries besides US and CA.
That is a huge untapped market for Sirius XM.
